Nanoimprinting is a technology used to form nanometer-size structures on base material surfaces. A variety of optical functions can be expressed according to the shape of the nanostructure.
We developed an inorganic wave plate for projectors, using imprinting with inorganic material on glass base material (glass imprinting). (Figure 1)

With glass imprinting, inorganic material is applied onto a glass base material, then a zigzag-patterned master mold is pressed to form a nanostructure. (Figure 2)

Our inorganic wave plate expresses phase differences through the phenomenon of structural birefringence*1 of nano-size periodic uneven structures, and physical properties can be controlled by the shape.

  1. *1With this phenomenon, the structure is such that the refractive index periodically changes. The refractive index changes according to the direction when the size of the period (cycle) is about the same as the wavelength of the light.

Through adjustment of the design parameters, our inorganic wave plates can control phase difference and transmittance wavelength dependence. (Figure 4) Also, since they consist of inorganic material only, they are suitable for projectors that require high heat resistance and light resistance. (Figure 5)
